Last week, I was on a call with him when he threw me a curveball:
โWhy are you in recruitment?โ
It rolled right off my tongue:
โBecause the most beautiful decoration in any hotel isnโt the designer lighting or marble floors, itโs the people.โ
Silence. A slow exhale. Then he leaned in and said:
โYou know, Heidi, I spent years chasing titles, bigger budgets, more attractive bonuses, grander openings…
I thought success was measured in financial performance, Forbes rankings, and how many VIPs walked through our doors, completely wow’ed.
But hereโs the part I never said out loud: after all those years, all that red carpet treatment, all those industry awards…
The guests donโt remember my name.
The owners rarely remember me.
But the team?
They remember exactly who I was.
They remember if I was the leader who pushed them forward or the one who hardly looked their way.
They remember if I set the gold standard or if I was just another forgettable LinkedIn announcement.
Thatโs when I saw the real gold in hospitality isnโt in the dรฉcor.
The true measure of success isnโt the hotels you manage.
Itโs the people who still say your name even when youโre not in the room because of the richness you added to their life.
Thatโs when my ego started to melt like sorbet on a golden spoon, right before my eyes.”
